Actually, now that you are picturing the worst, breathe a sigh of relief. It was delightfull! Believe it or not, Oktoberfest is one huge carnival. Sure, there are beer tents, drinking songs, and men and women dressed like Hansel and Gretel carrying six or eight enormous "mas"es of beer, but there are midway games, giant "bretzels" and Dumbo rides! Yes indeed. A little something for everyone at Oktoberfest. Big giant beers for Russ, Dumbo ride (all by herself! Making it go up and down alone! Scaring the daylights out of Mummy!) for Fiona, and gawking at the native Bavarian clothes (and yes, envying them a little bit) for me. It was a wonderful way to spend German Reunification Day. The only flaw- the bathrooms. Millions of people drinking huge mugs of beer. Ick.
After all the Oktoberfun, on to Salzburg, Austria. Salzburg is a beautiful city with great shopping. And of course, the Original Sound of Music Tour! Ooh, far better than the giant beers or the Dumbo ride. Still people dressed in native clothes, but singing sixties show tunes! If you haven't been, please do go. Seriously. Even Russ loved the tour (the open bar on the bus was helpful) and Fiona requested "Do Re Me" again and again. There is nothing like hopping up those steps shouting "Re! A drop of golden sun!" and running along the edges of the fountain. If only I had a carpetbag and curtain clothes.
